Hello all!! Superbowl Sunday and I'm going to miss it. The game is supposed to be on at like 2:30am our time, not sure if we are going to be able to see it here, but they say we will. Have a few beers for me today and some good food!!
We visited two schools today and had lunch at a Shieks house. All a great experience. The unit we are relieving donated soccer uniforms to one of the local schools, so we went by to provide security and watch the game. What is amazing to me is how much these kids want anything you have. I forgot how third world children are, so appreciative of anything. My last visit was many years ago to the Philippines I had similar experiences. The children come up to you saying "Mista, mista, chocolate?" Something as simple as a pencil makes their day. A lot of the kids know a few English words, and they were showing me their books and actually are being taught English here. We spent a couple hours there. They are so fascinated with cameras and being able to see themselves as soon as you take the picture.
From there we visited a second school where they were having some kind of ceremony. All the kids were sitting on the deck outside while the higher ups, Shieks and our staff was sitting sharing food and chai. The kids were handed out rulers, folders and pencils, all of which they couldn't get enough of. Overall, kids are kids. Even with the huge language barrier, you can still communicate enough with hand gestures. We probably spent more time talking with them then their own parents do. Kind of reminded me of the south side of Chicago. Discipline is kind of like the old Catholic schools here. One of the teachers was walking around with a little stickthey would use to keep the kids in line.
Next we went down the road to a Shieks house. Our staff had lunch with them while we provided security outside. The Iraqi Police were with us and I spent about at hour with my Arabic language book having the Iraqis teach me the proper pronuciation of words. They brought a table outside and had all kinds of food for us too. I stayed away from the meat, but the veggies and flat bread with whatever sauce they had was very tasty. I hope I don't get the runs on the way out. It was good.
Other than that...all is good here. The big picture is we are trying to handover as soon as we can to the Iraqis. Not to sure what the media is saying these days back home, but there is a plan. It does take time though to do it right and leave this country stable enough for them to take over for themselves.
Until next post.......

Hi Joe,
What a amazing story. We never know what we have until you hear these stories. Sometimes life gets tough, but I guess not that tough.
It sounds like a huge learning experience. If there is anything that we can help out with maybe even school supplies for these children. That is something that our children love to be able to do. Danialle is very giving, the first thing she said is maybe our classs would do a care package with stuff like that in it.You all are doing a wonderful thing. I wish there was a faster learning process over there, just to move you all out of there. They always say that things are moving along. But... you would see it faster then what we would. We hear it,but we also see so many soldiers still being sent there, so it is really hard to visualize that there really is change.Seeing it and passsing it on is more believable then believing any high office holder.
As for the food you had at the Shieks, hope it held up in you. I would be afraid to eat anything they gave me. You never know what they could be feeding you.:)
I hope you get to watch the game today. Happy Super Football Day!!
It is the commercials that I like to watch more then the game. And the half-time show.Maybe we will have a wardrobe malfunction again. HaHa!
Besides everything else we do Love you and we care about the sacrifices that you do for our country. You get home soon and take care our your new life here. Everyone is here on this end anticipating your coming home arrival. We all love you Joe.
Take Care
Cindy
Hi Joe,
What a wonderful story. It is to bad that it could not be under differ conditions getting to know the children as they are all so innocent to what has happened. Hopefully what you and others are doing over there will help them to have much better lifes than there parents and grandparents.
Hopefully you will get so see the game and have a few beers.
Take care, be safe and I look forward to hearing about more postitive things that are happening there.
Just know that you are loved and we are all praying for a safe return.
Love,
Kathy
Joe!
Great to hear from you! Happy belated Superbowl Sunday and Happy Super Tuesday! (We're in election mode over here...) Loved hearing about your interaction with the kids over there. How cute! Are you able to take photos? But not send photos? It's so true - kids are kids and that is probably the easiest way to connect with people wherever you travel. Can't wait to hear your Arabic when you get back! ;) Stay safe and healthy over there. All you're missing is the snow here. I drove for about two hours at 30 mph on I90 the other night. Fun fun! Love ya, Leah
Hi Joe,
Well the football game didn't turn out in my favor. I'm a Michigan fan so I wanted Patriots to take it as Brady is the Man. Manning desereved it more, he kicked ass and his defense was way to hot for The Patriots. The Best Men won!
So hows everything going for you? Hope everything is well.
Is the weather still holding in the 50s?
Anything has to be better then here.
Well guy, write when you can. And I will do the same.
Be SAFE!!!
Love ya Cindy
Hi Joe,
What a day you have had. What a blessing to be able to give to children that really do not have anything. As you said, we here in the U.S. do realize the needs that are so great there.
We continue to pray for all of you that are there. We want you all to come safely AND SOON!
As Cindy said What A Huge Learning Experience.
Please be safe, our love and prayers are with you and all that are serving in the military.
We Love you
Aunt Stella & Uncle Willard
Hi Joe,
Got copies of the pictures of you on email today. You are doing such a wonderful thing. The only thing I don't know, is how do you know what kids are safe to be around? They just sacrafice all their family members, that I would be scared to death who you come in contact with. How do you know?
You look good, hope you are feeling as good.
Today is Grandpa Con's 90th birthday, Mom is having a big party for him at their house. If you read this any time soon, maybe you could send a emial to Mom's email address and wish him a Happy Birthday. He would really like that. I'm sure you have Mom's emial address but if not here it is sawooster@aol.com. I see that she finally learned how to blog you. I'm going to Florida next week, I'm going to have to show Uncle Orrin how to blog.
Everything is pretty good here. Cold as heck, but everyone is doing fine.
You take care of yourself be safe until next blog.
Love Cindy
Hi Joe,
How are you doing? Hope all is good.
Four more days and then I get out of this cold weather. It has been SOO Cold...Danialle and all of Jackson's kids didn't have school because of the wind chill being 22 below.I like winter, but this is a little too much for me.
When does the weather change in Iraq? I remember hearing about the 130 degree weather. I hope you are out of there before that happens. But probably not likely.
Valentines is just around the corner. I can't believe how fast this year is going.I only hope that it is moving as fast for you.
Have you decided if there is anything that we can send to you? Mel said that she was sending some oatmeal for you. If you can think of anything else that sounds good let us know. I know alot of stuff does probably does, but I mean what is sendable.
Haven't seen alot of blogs from the union steward.I think they are crazy and I know you enjoy their blogs as much as I do. Waiting for the next.
Well for now I will say goodbye. Next time I talk to you I will be in Florida.
Take care, be safe, and Thank You for everything.
Love Ya Cindy
Hi Joe, oh my gosh are you missing a lousy winter. It is the snowiest in a long time, we just cannot catch a break. Sleet, rain, snow, freezing temps...sound famliar.
Tarzan is still tapping Nat's head in the middle of the night...good thing she does not mind sleeping under the covers!
Keep a look out for a package coming your way.
I am going to sit back and read your amazing story. Thanks for keeping in touch.
HAPPY VALENTINES DAY!!!
Hey Joe,
Well, your officially assigned as a Chicago Fire Department engineer to the 5th district, 2nd platoon. Since you’re not assigned to our house anymore, bye . . .
Ok. I’ll keep writing you, but only because I think I’m the only male friend you have. (or at least the only one who knows how to write)
I’m the steward for the 19th battalion again, and your grievance has still gone nowhere. We are having elections for our E-Board. I’ll keep you updated.
We are burning everything. We’ve had at least 10 fires since the year began. It’s weird. It seems every battalion is having fires. The scanner is full of them now. It’s almost eerie. A lot of fun though. We’re enjoying it while we can. Always feast or famine.
Mike is on our engine for his first day. He got a new nickname from eng. school. "GRINDER" because he kept grinding the gears going from drive to pump. It's even on video tape. We have a lot planned. Also, Ken is back and the Capt. Made him the #1 driver. (so much for switching off) Rocco quit cooking after a spat with the Capt. And now we’re switching off the duties. Also, Greg's doc told him he could go back to work, but the city won’t see him for 6 weeks, which put him past the 3 month point and they put him on extended. Last, No contract info.
We’re thinking of you. Stay safe and we’ll do the same, Brother,
Ray
Ps, we need the recipe for that Cesar salad. I’m sure it’s easy, but us stupid firemen can’t figure it out.
Hi Joe,
Got to see pictures of you with your gear and with some of the children, what a site. I feel so much for the young kids and hope that what we are doing over there will help them to have a better life. I would like to send you a package but I would like to know what you are in need of or would like to have.
Cindy & Danialle are in sunny Florida while we brave out this cold weather they we are having. I am looking so forward to spring.
Stay safe and let me know what you would like to have sent over I will get it together for you.
Love Ya,
Kathy
Ray,
Thanks for keeping me posted on firehouse and CFD activity. Honestly, I think you are seeing more activity than we are here. I think when I get back you might actually be better at starting an IV than me. Wow, must be in some warped out world now. Glad to hear you guys are getting hits, I miss it brother and can't wait to eat some smoke again once I get back. There actually is a burned out building here at the base we stay at and every once in awhile I go through just to get that smell. I do miss it.
So the Grinder huh? Well, don't worry I won't say anything to him. I guess scoring 13th on the exam doesn't mean you can actually do the job. Just means your book smart.
Keep working on my greviance for me...wait a minute never mind start working on my greviance. Ray I would have voted for you here, but no one sent me a absentee ballot. Were you the only one on the ballot this time? No others to choose from?
Keep me posted on firehouse news Ray, it's nice to hear what's going on over there.
Oh, as far as the salad, very simple. Romaine lettuce, red onion, blue cheese crumbles, ceaser croutons, that ceaser salad dressing, named something like Julius Ceaser or some name. Usually on the top shelf, has a green label in a round bottle. Then some parmesan cheese and black pepper. When you make it don't put the dressing in until just before you serve it. Otherwise the lettuce will be soggy. Put the lettuce once cut up in the freezer for a few to crispen up then add the ingredients once ready to serve.
Anyway Ray, be safe and keep in touch. Oh, can you send me a City of Chicago/Fire Department Flag. You know that one that is a combo flag? Want to hang it up here.
Take care brother!!
Joe
Mary Jo,
Thank you for the package that is on it's way and your continuing cards and messages. Always nice to hear from home.
Joe
Kathy,
As far as what we need here, nothing that I can think of at the moment. We are pretty well supported here so far. We have a basic exchange that has the necessities there. If you'd like to send something than any kind of snack food or candy. Just the basic stuff from home that supports us. Anything I get I usually pass out to my guys anyway, let the young guys get what they need. I will keep you posted if we run into a big need. Thanks so much.
Joe
Joe,
It is so comforting to see those post come through. As much as you would like to have a little more action, I find it easier to know that things are more peaceful.
At the airport during my lay over in Atlanta. I talked with a Marine that was on his way back from leave. Of course I'm one of those people who say Thank You and he came back with Thank You so saying Thank You. And the norm, I start crying. Danialle is like Mom stop. I went back up to him to ask how long he was there and how much longer before he is out of Iraq.He said been thee 8 month, had 4 to go. I told him about you. He said I want to offer you comfort that things are alot better then what you see on the news. Refugees are moving back into their towns and getting settled. Life is alot better for them. He told me he hoped that it would comfort our family and friends to know that things are more peaceful. So I will take that as a comforting word.
It sounds like you are receiving cards from home. About time for Danialle and I to go on a shopping spree.
We are in sunny Florida. We leave on Friday.I got over to Uncle Orrin's to help him with the blog. Don't know forsure if he will use it as he likes to send private notes. But, he can get on it if he wants now to read your messages.
Well guy for now we send our prayers and love to you all. You stay safe.
Love
Cindy
Egineer Rimkus good to here from you stay safe and we'll see you soon. Keep up the post. EK
Hi Joe,
Got your blog and was glad to hear from you. Cindy and I are going to be doing some shopping to get a box in the mail to you. I am sure that Danialle will want to help out. We are getting more snow today and I am so over it. I can't wait for the warmer weather. Stay safe and we will write soon.
Love,
Kathy
Hi Joe,
Back safe and sound from heat and into the cold. I swear this snow will never stop, but then we will be complaining that it is to hot.We just are never happy..
Hows things going over there? Has it picked up for you? Hope they aren't working you to death, just keeping you from making time go by slow.It sounds like you could really be running if you had to work at the fire department. Would'nt you know.
Everyone in Florida seem to be doing ok. Grandpa had that spell during Thanksgiving on into December, but he seems to be doing as well as can be. Dad has been having back problems and its causing him a bunch of grief, but other then that he is doing pretty good too. Mom, she has her hands full, but she seems to be getting along pretty good.
So how is your weather there now. When are the season changes around there. You had said when you got there that it was raining pretty good, what is the weather like at this time. I hope that you get out of there before the hot- hot times.
I got a card back in the mail the other day. Danialle missed a number in the zip code so it came back. Darn it all! Then of course they write all over it, so you can't resend it. Have to find another envelope and resend it.
Well, for now I will sign off. You stay healthy and safe. We love you all .
Love Cindy
